Welcome to Vajrayana Institute

Vajrayana Institute ("VI") is a centre for the study and development of the mind in accordance with the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism.

Situated in the Inner West suburb of Ashfield, Sydney, VI offers regular classes in meditation and Buddhism suitable for everyone, ranging from drop-in meditation classes to in-depth study of Buddhist philosophy.

Through our outreach groups, we also offer meditation courses and drop-in classes around Sydney.

The 16 Guidelines are a direct and practical tool for anyone who wants to lead a happier, more meaningful life. It provides a simple, robust framework for reflecting on the ways we think, speak, act, and find meaning in life.

Participants will be offered a participatory and experiential introduction to the 16 Guidelines and the four wisdom themes that underlie them. These guidelines are versatile and holistic and can be used to promote mindfulness and wisdom in schools, with youth, in healthcare, prisons, the workplace and the home. About the teacher:
renate ogilivie_smRenate is a psychotherapist in private practice, teacher of Buddhist Philosophy, and Corporate Trainer with over 20 years experience. She is co-director of Machik Labdron International Women's Retreats in Paro, Bhutan and a special advisor to BNF (Bhutan Nuns Foundation). Her special interests are contemporary secular ethics, the principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH), and the application of the Buddha's teachings to life in the 21st century. She has worked for DER SPIEGEL news magazine in Germany, and as a Literary Agent and Publisher in London.

Free Meditation Classes around Sydney

howtomeditateA new round of "How to Meditate: Happy Mind, Happy Life" will begin at meditation groups affliated to VI in the suburbs around Sydney from Monday 30 January. We have added a new group at Newtown, led by one of our executive committee member, Paul Smith.

VI Regular Programme resumes from 30 January

jampa jaffe_sm7 Point Mind Training with Jampa Jaffe (Monday 7-9pm; repeated on Tuesday 2-4pm).

"The Seven-Point Mind-Training--The Everyday Journey of Heart and Mind", will continue in 2012 with the first point beginning with a discussion of karma. Contemplating karma helps us to see that we are the authors of our lives, thereby overcoming our unwillingness or our inability to exercise our freedom and privilege by consciously choosing how we are going to lead our lives. Everyone one is welcome to join anytime, whether they have attended previously or not. Details here.

Mindful Eating and Living
with Fiona Halar

Date & Times: Saturday 11 February 10.00am-1.00pm

This workshop with Fiona, a wholefood nutritionist, vegan and Buddhist, offers an insightful exploration into our relationship with food and our environment. Learn about the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and how certain mindfulness practices can help you make compassionate choices that have a profoundly positive affect not only your own health and well being, but also on the well being of other animals and our planet. The workshop also includes demonstration of delicious food preparation.

with Ven Tenzin Chogkyi

Dates & Times: Monday-Thursday 20-23 February, 7.00pm-9.00pm
(Note: Wed 22 Feb will start half an hour later due to the special puja for Tibetan New Year)

According to Buddhism, much of our suffering comes from our misunderstanding of reality, and the disturbing emotions that arise from these wrong concepts. This class will present the various techniques and practices taught in Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice for working with our emotions. Beginners are welcome and encouraged, as well as older students wanting to learn new techniques for dealing with emotions.

About the teacher
Ven Tenzin Chogkyi is an experienced Buddhist teacher and meditator. She has been a student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche since the early 90's and has also completed several long meditation retreats, including two 3-year retreats. Ven Chogkyi took novice ordination in 2004 with His Holiness, and since 2006 she has been teaching at various FPMT centers around the globe.
